Our team has investigated innovative approaches. We aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals in the later stages of life. We also strive to improve their independence.
Aging is different today.
The perception of aging has greatly evolved. Better health and lifestyles among older adults mean we need new solutions. With healthier habits and improved medical care, chronic conditions have become less common. (Zhang et al., 2024) As a result, older adults now expect more independence. We need to reconsider traditional retirement community models. We should explore different concepts, like the OASIS concept, that can better support these evolving expectations.
Recent polls show that over 80% of adults want to stay in their own homes. Our research suggests that starting a social and cultural club can help make this happen.
Introducing the OASIS Concept
The OASIS concept helps people connect with others. Through workshops, lectures, and activities, members can find new purpose and help prevent depression and anxiety linked to cognitive decline. We have seen that members feel happier and families feel less stressed.
More
Evidence from participant feedback and preliminary outcome measures indicates that OASIS members report increased levels of happiness and that families experience reduced stress. The OASIS concept facilitates social connections, which are known to positively impact well-being among older adults. For example, workshops, lectures, and organized activities not only enable members to engage with peers and develop meaningful relationships but also foster a renewed sense of purpose. Furthermore, these structured opportunities for social and cognitive engagement have been associated in the literature with a decreased risk of depression and anxiety, particularly those conditions linked to cognitive decline.
This home-based approach meets different needs and offers a safe, family-like place with extra benefits. Each OASIS member joins a group where they can grow and thrive.
OASIS programs are set up like a school, helping members feel a sense of achievement. People can join in person or online.
